Intercultural Understanding with Empathy & Respect in Iceland with a school visit

Core Activities

Day 1 – Welcome and connections
Start your journey with an energetic introduction to the STPM approach, spotlighting Iceland’s innovations in education, sustainability and technology. Discover digital tools for resource sharing, explore “the Icelandic corner” to dive into local cultural and educational heritage, and bond with new European colleagues through engaging ice-breakers and a relaxed social event.

Day 2:

Discovering ENIA and the five fingers
Begin with an inspiring overview of the ENIA concept and its role in fostering empathy, tolerance and social development through the “Say Hello to the World” project. Enjoy a dynamic greeting game to build mutual respect and belonging, then take part in “This is me – thumb”, an interactive session where Enia (the puppet) uses pictograms and a drama activity to teach non-verbal communication and boost self-awareness.

Day 3:

Family and school dynamics
In “Me and my family – index finger”, explore how family influences social values and identity through interactive games and role-play that nurture empathy and creative problem-solving. Later, in “Me and my kindergarten/school – middle finger”, discover strategies to create a secure, inclusive educational environment via a creative ENIA puppet workshop and a team treasure hunt that highlights key roles in schools.

Day 4:

Icelandic education and sustainability
Visit one of Reykjavík’s newest schools that integrates kindergarten, primary and secondary education. Witness a balanced curriculum that values both practical and academic subjects, inclusion and well-being. Experience outdoor activities rooted in Icelandic heritage that build resilience, and see first-hand how democracy and sustainability shape a thriving school community.

Day 5:

Community and European exchange
“Me and my town – ring finger” focuses on deepening children’s understanding of their social and cultural environment. Reflect on your role as a mentor and engage in a collaborative project that celebrates diverse cultural identities and forges symbolic connections among communities. Then join the “Sharing positive practices – a European dimension” session to exchange successful classroom ideas with peers from across Europe.

Day 6:

National identity and action planning
“Me and my country – little finger” guides you through activities that build national identity, celebrate cultural heritage and promote respect for diversity. Enhance communication and teamwork through creative games. Then, using digital collaboration tools, develop an actionable ENIA plan for your classroom with defined short-, medium- and long-term strategies, followed by a reflective evaluation session.

Day 7:

Well-being in Icelandic hot tubs
Conclude your ENIA journey by embracing Iceland’s well-being tradition. Enjoy a serene, screen-free experience in a local thermal pool and hot tubs, offering the perfect opportunity to relax, reflect on your experiences and leave feeling refreshed, inspired and ready to transform your teaching.
